Size Guide

Last updated:

Choosing a size online is easier than it sounds when you compare with something you already own. This guide explains the sizes Embro Haven offers for each piece, how unisex sizing fits, how to measure a hoodie, crewneck, tee or joggers you like, how to check a one-size hat and what to do if you sit between two sizes. Exact garment measurements per size are being confirmed and will be added to this page; until then, the comparison method below is the most reliable way to choose, and size exchanges are free within 60 days.

How unisex sizing fits

All our adult tops are unisex. Unisex garments are cut straighter through the body than women’s fitted styles, with a little more room at the waist and slightly longer sleeves. In practice:

  • If you usually wear men’s sizes, start with your usual size.
  • If you usually wear women’s sizes, many people find one size down from their usual women’s size gives a similar fit, while their usual size gives a relaxed fit.
  • For an oversized, slouchy look — popular with hoodies and crewnecks — go one size up from the size that fits neatly.

These are general tendencies, not measurements. The comparison method below is more reliable than any rule of thumb.

The comparison method: measure what you already love

The best guide to a new hoodie is a hoodie you already wear happily. You need a tape measure (a ruler and a piece of string work too) and a flat surface.

Hoodies, crewnecks, tees and quarter-zips

  1. Lay it flat. Place the top face up on a table or the floor. Smooth it out without stretching. Close any zip.
  2. Chest width: measure straight across from one side seam to the other, about 2.5 cm (1 inch) below the armpits.
  3. Body length: measure from the highest point of the shoulder, next to the collar or hood seam, straight down to the bottom of the hem or rib.
  4. Sleeve length: measure from the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff, along the top of the sleeve.
  5. Write the numbers down with the size on the label of that top.

When we publish measurements per size, compare your numbers with the chart and choose the size whose chest width is closest to yours. Until then, email us your three numbers and the size and type of the top you measured, and we will tell you which of our sizes is the closest match we can confirm.

Joggers

  1. Lay a pair of joggers you like flat, front facing up.
  2. Waist: measure straight across the top of the waistband, relaxed, not stretched.
  3. Inside leg: measure from the crotch seam down the inner leg to the bottom of the ankle cuff.
  4. Hip: measure straight across at the widest point, just below the pockets.

Our joggers have an elastic waist with a drawcord and cuffed ankles. If you are between sizes and prefer comfort, the larger size is usually the better choice; the drawcord takes up extra room at the waist.

Measuring your body instead

If you do not have a garment to compare with, you can measure yourself. Wear a thin layer and keep the tape level and snug but not tight.

  • Chest: around the fullest part of the chest, under the arms.
  • Waist: around your natural waist, usually just above the belly button.
  • Hips: around the widest part of the hips.

Body measurements and garment measurements are different: a garment is always larger than the body to allow movement, and a relaxed hoodie much more so. If you send us body measurements, tell us whether you like a neat or a relaxed fit, and we will help you choose.

Kids’ sizes

The kids’ rainbow hoodie comes in Youth XS, Youth S, Youth M and Youth L. Children grow fast, so a little extra room is usually welcome: if your child is between sizes, the larger size gives a longer season of wear, and sleeves can be rolled at first. The most reliable way to choose is the same comparison method — measure a hoodie or sweatshirt that fits your child well now and send us the chest width and body length if you would like help.

Hats: checking a one-size fit

Our caps, truckers, corduroy cap, beanies and bucket hats are one size. To check how a one-size hat is likely to sit on you, measure your head:

  1. Wrap a soft tape measure around your head, about 1 cm (half an inch) above your ears and eyebrows, where a hat would normally sit.
  2. Keep the tape level all the way round, including across the bump at the back of your head.
  3. Read the measurement where the tape meets, snug but not tight.

If you know that one-size hats are usually tight or loose on you, email us your head measurement before you order and we will tell you what we can confirm about the hat you are looking at. Cuffed beanies stretch and can be worn higher or lower to change the fit. A bucket hat sits lower on the head than a cap by design.

Between two sizes?

It happens often, and the right choice depends on how you like to wear the piece:

  • Hoodies: most people choose the larger size for a relaxed, layered look. A hood adds visual bulk, so if you want a trimmer look, take the smaller size.
  • Crewnecks: your usual size gives a neat fit under a coat; one size up gives the oversized look.
  • Full-zip hoodie: often worn open over another layer; your usual size works, or size up if you will wear a thick sweater underneath.
  • Tees: your usual size, unless you want a boxy look.
  • Joggers: the larger size for comfort; the drawcord handles the waist.

Three worked examples

Choosing a hoodie by comparison

Sam loves an old grey hoodie labelled L that feels just right: relaxed but not baggy. Sam lays it flat, measures the chest width, body length and sleeve length, and emails the three numbers with the product link for the Paper Plane Embroidered Hoodie. We reply with the closest size we can confirm for that hoodie. If Sam had wanted a roomier fit than the old hoodie, we would suggest one size up.

A gift without knowing the size

Priya wants a Cherry Pair Embroidered Crewneck for her sister but does not know her size. She checks a sweatshirt label next time she visits, or asks a shared friend. Without that, she chooses the size her sister usually wears in men’s or unisex tops, knowing her sister can exchange it within 60 days with a free return label if it is not right.

A beanie for someone who finds hats tight

Tom finds most one-size hats tight. Before ordering a Custom Name Embroidered Cuffed Beanie, he measures around his head and emails us the number. We tell him what we can confirm about the beanie’s stretch and suggest wearing the cuff lower, which gives a little more room at the crown.

Sizing gifts

When you are buying for someone else, look for clues before guessing: a size label on a hoodie they leave at your place, a photo of them in a top that fits well, a partner or roommate who can check quietly. If you cannot find out, hats are the safest gift because they are one size, and for tops a relaxed fit is more forgiving than a tight one, so the larger of two likely sizes is usually the safer choice. The recipient can exchange within 60 days using your order number.

Matching sets in different sizes

Matching hoodies or crewnecks for a couple or a family are ordered piece by piece, each in its own size. Choose the same colour and design for each, and on personalised pieces type each person’s text in the fields for that piece. Different sizes do not change the colour or the design, so the set still matches.

Embroidery placement and size

We place designs relative to the collar, chest and sleeve, so that a left-chest honeybee reads as a left-chest design on an S and on a 3XL alike. The exact position in centimetres can vary slightly between sizes. Personalised text is stitched to fit its field, which keeps a name on a crewneck chest balanced across sizes.

Common sizing mistakes to avoid

  • Measuring a stretched-out favourite that has grown over years of wear: compare with something closer to new if you can.
  • Measuring around the garment instead of straight across it while flat; across is what size charts use.
  • Comparing a hoodie with a fitted sweater: compare like with like whenever possible.
  • Forgetting to close the zip on a zip hoodie before measuring the chest width.

If the size is not right

You can exchange any piece for another size within 60 days, and we send you a free return label — including for change-of-mind exchanges. Please return it unworn and unwashed. Personalised pieces are re-stitched with the same text unless you tell us otherwise. See Returns & Exchanges. Within 24 hours of ordering, you can also simply change the size before we start: see Cancel or Change an Order.

Shrinkage and care

To keep the fit you chose, wash tops inside out on a cool, gentle cycle and dry on low or flat. High heat can shrink most knitted fabrics and is hard on embroidery. Never iron directly over the stitches. Hats should be spot cleaned rather than machine washed.
